Community center and mosque express sadness over vandalism

Authorities are investigating after a series of vandalism incidents involving a mosque, a residential property, and a bus in Leicester. Surveillance footage captured two individuals throwing traffic cones at a door inside the Peace Centre on Thurncourt Road, Thurnby Lodge, on Sunday evening.

Leicestershire Police confirmed that three separate reports of damage had been filed in the area. The force stated it believes the incidents were random and not aimed at specific properties.

Numayar Gazi, spokesperson for the Peace Centrewhich houses a mosque, a community centre, and a weekly food bankexpressed distress over the attacks. "It is very hurtful to be targeted in this way," he said, adding relief that no one was physically harmed.

Mr. Gazi highlighted the strong connection the centre has with the local community. "We are fully integrated into the neighbourhood, so experiencing this kind of attack feels like rejection. Those responsible are welcome to come forward, have a hot drink, and explain their actions, otherwise these issues will never be resolved."

He noted the deliberate nature of the act, saying, "They specifically came here; it was not a random pass-by. Our location is quite a distance from the main road."

This is not the first incident at the Peace Centre. In May 2024, bottles and stones were thrown at the building, which has been serving the community for 12 years.

A police spokesperson said: "We have received three reports relating to damage to a bus, a property on Thurncourt Road, and a house. All incidents are believed to be connected and appear to be random. CCTV footage has been collected and investigations are ongoing to identify those involved. It is suspected that a group of teenagers carried out the offences around 18:00 GMT on Sunday. Officers are increasing patrols in the area and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward."
