Transmission line failure causes massive power outage in western region of Cuba

HAVANA On Wednesday, Havana and much of western Cuba experienced a major power outage, leaving millions without electricity amid ongoing struggles with a deteriorating electrical system. Authorities identified a failure in a transmission line linking two key power plants as the cause of the blackout, with officials indicating that electricity would be gradually restored.

The blackout comes after several days of peak-hour electricity shortages across the country. Previous incidents have also affected water services and disrupted local businesses, highlighting the vulnerability of the islands infrastructure.

Earlier in September, Cuba faced a complete nationwide blackout, attributed to aging equipment and fuel shortages at power stations. The energy crisis is compounded by the nations severe economic downturn, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemics impact on tourism, heightened U.S. sanctions, and a failed attempt at currency unification through financial reform.

Meanwhile, eastern Cuba continues to contend with electricity disruptions following the impact of Hurricane Melissa in late October, which further stressed the regions fragile power network.
