Media reports suspect arrested in pipe bomb case in US capital

A man was detained on Thursday in connection with the alleged placement of pipe bombs near the headquarters of both the Democratic and Republican parties just prior to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, according to reports from US media outlets. CNN, citing law enforcement sources, confirmed that the FBI apprehended the individual after offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. ABC News reported that the arrest took place in Virginia. The identity of the suspect was not immediately revealed.

The pipe bombs, which were placed outside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) offices in Washington, DC, on the evening of January 5, did not detonate. The devices were discovered the following day, as supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden's electoral win.

Over the years, the FBI released several photos and video footage showing a masked and hooded suspect, and later increased the reward to $500,000. Thursdays arrest marks the first major development in the case, which has fueled multiple conspiracy theories among far-right groups.
