Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed that former President Donald Trump was "furious" with her after she advocated for the public release of the Epstein files, warning that it would "hurt people." Greene shared these details during an upcoming interview on 60 Minutes, which will be broadcast on Sunday. A preview of the interview was aired on CBS affiliates on Friday evening.
Greene was one of only four House Republicans who signed a discharge petition urging the Trump administration to release the Department of Justice's files concerning the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted child sex trafficker and former associate of Trump. The petition ultimately gathered enough support to trigger a vote, which passed both chambers of Congress. Although Trump had the authority to release the documents without needing approval from Congress, he refrained from doing so.
Following the passage of the petition, the Department of Justice has set a deadline of December 19 to release the files. Notably, in the month after Trump's inauguration, Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed that Epstein's client list was "sitting on my desk." However, during the summer, the DOJ reversed this statement, declaring that no such list existed. Reports later surfaced suggesting that Bondi had informed Trump of his name being included in the files.
Recently, the House Oversight Committee released a series of emails between Epstein and various individuals, in which Epstein frequently mentioned Trump in vague and cryptic terms. In one exchange, Epstein wrote, "I know how dirty Donald is."
Greene discussed her interactions with Trump regarding the Epstein files and her decision to sign the discharge petition. In her conversation with 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl, she explained that Trump was deeply upset with her actions. "We talked about the Epstein files," Greene said. "He was extremely angry that I had signed the discharge petition to release the files. I believe those women deserve to know the truth. They deserve full transparency. And he was furious with me."
When Stahl asked Greene what Trump had specifically said, she recalled his response: "He said that it was going to hurt people."
Following her signing of the petition, Trump withdrew his endorsement for Greene's re-election campaign in the upcoming midterm elections. Shortly thereafter, Greene announced her resignation from Congress, effective January.
