Donald Trump beamed with pride as he accepted a gold medal and placed it around his own neck, marking a moment he had long awaited. It wasnt the Nobel Peace Prize, a distinction he campaigned for earlier this year, but rather a new accoladethe FIFA Peace Prize, an entirely invented honor presented to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This event took place at the Kennedy Center Opera House, where Trump had come to take part in the FIFA World Cup draw, which the U.S. will co-host with Mexico and Canada next year.
Infantino, a familiar figure in Trump's orbit, hailed the president as a dynamic leader who has engaged in diplomatic efforts that have fostered dialogue, de-escalation, and stability." With the golden trophy and medal proudly adorning his neck, Trump basked in the applause of football dignitaries, seemingly in high spirits. He later participated in the draw alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, laughing and clapping as the tournaments groups were formed.
As the event progressed, Trump took his place in the presidential box, enjoying the spectacle alongside other sports icons like Wayne Gretzky, Shaquille ONeal, and Tom Brady. As expected, the evening concluded with a performance by The Village People, during which Trump showcased his signature arm-pumping dance, a nod to the campaign rallies that defined his 2020 re-election effort. For a man often criticized for his exhaustion at public events, this was a rare moment of energy for the 79-year-old leader.
Yet, behind the spectacle, there were more serious matters unfolding. Earlier that day, Trump had received a classified intelligence briefing about the ongoing international operations involving the U.S. military. One such operation had resulted in the controversial attack on a wrecked speedboat, raising questions about potential violations of military conduct. The Pentagons actions, reportedly under the orders of Trumps appointed defense chief, Pete Hegseth, had sparked calls for a congressional investigation, with some members demanding Hegseths removal.
Despite the gravity of these issues, Trump seemed unfazed. After a short ride to the Kennedy Center, he opted to stay longer than planned. Hours later, a White House press pool, expecting him to return to the White House, found themselves waiting for an explanation. Was he discussing the various crises his administration faced, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, his deteriorating approval ratings, or the domestic political fallout from rising prices?
Instead of addressing such matters, Trump remained at the Kennedy Center, inspecting renovations that had been made to the venue under his leadership, a project he had boasted about earlier. His aides explained that he was "looking at Kennedy Center improvements" with Ric Grenell, his former ambassador to Germany, who currently serves as the Kennedy Centers interim president. Trump, it seemed, was more interested in examining the fruits of his own political efforts than the pressing issues of state.
After two and a half hours, the motorcade finally moved, and Trump made his way back to the White House, where his day of ceremonial events gave way to a brief return to official business. His personal attorney, Boris Ephsteyn, was seen waiting in the Oval Office to discuss a few remaining matters before Trump would prepare for his next eventa performance by Andrea Bocelli.
For Trump, the day's balance between self-promotion and brief moments of state business served as a reminder that, even amid crises, the showboth political and personalalways goes on.
