The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed that a criminal investigation has begun after elected officials in the Newry, Mourne and Down region received threats. The warnings appeared in a video shared on social media, showing three armed, masked individuals standing beside an Irish flag. One of them delivered a message claiming that local assembly members (MLAs) and councillors were being targeted due to their "policies" regarding immigration.
The video was reportedly issued by a previously unknown organization calling itself the "New Republican Movement".
Superintendent Lynne Corbett stated: "No one should be subjected to threats or intimidation for fulfilling the responsibilities of a position to which they have been democratically elected. An investigation has been launched to identify those accountable. Our officers in Newry, Mourne and Down are working closely with local elected representatives to ensure their safety and to allow them to perform their duties free from intimidation."
Responses from Politicians
Sinn Fin MP Dire Hughes condemned the threats, describing them as "sinister". He added: "The threats by anonymous individuals against elected members in Newry, Mourne and Down undermine democracy and the mandate entrusted to us by the public. These people represent no one and will not prevent us from fulfilling our responsibilities. Despite past attacks, including bombs and online threats, Sinn Fin will continue advocating for our constituents. I extend solidarity to my colleagues across the region and call for unity against these misguided individuals."
Alliance Party MLA and deputy leader Ein Tennyson also criticized the video, calling it "vile and reprehensible". He emphasized: "Threats like these have no place in society. My support is with every councillor and MLA targeted. This is not only an attack on politicians but on the democratic process and the people they serve. These individuals do not speak for our community and will not succeed in holding us back. Alliance Party will remain committed to serving our constituents, promoting a safer and more inclusive future in Newry, Mourne and Down."
