NEW YORK On November 26, New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced his resignation, citing concerns linked to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdanis public comments about Israel. Tucker revealed that his decision was influenced by personal beliefs and his support for Israel.
The resignation follows Mamdanis victory in the November 4 mayoral election. Tucker, who has led the FDNY since August 2024, stated the decision was emotional but rooted in ideological differences with the incoming administration. His departure marks the most prominent early exit from the city leadership before Mamdani assumes office on January 1.
Tucker, who is Jewish, shared with CBS News that his faith played a role in his choice. A brief resignation letter was submitted to current Mayor Eric Adams on November 5, with Tuckers last day scheduled for December 19. The FDNY deferred questions regarding his successor to City Hall.
Mamdanis Views on Israel and Gaza
Mayor-elect Mamdani has openly opposed Israels status as a Jewish state, advocating instead for equal rights for all citizens. He has described Israels military actions in Gaza as "genocide" following the 2023 Hamas attacks. During a November 21 meeting at the White House, President Donald Trump and Mamdani discussed New York City policies, including affordability, public safety, and immigration enforcement.
Tucker told CBS that he believed Mamdanis stance on Israel would make it challenging to continue in his leadership role. FDNY officials confirmed they had not been directly contacted by Mamdani regarding Tuckers role.
Controversy Surrounding Manhattan Synagogue Protest
Tucker also referenced a November 19 pro-Palestinian protest outside Park East Synagogue in Manhattan. The protest targeted an event organized by Nefesh BNefesh, which promotes Jewish immigration to Israel and settlements in the West Bank. Demonstrators reportedly chanted against the Israel Defense Forces and blocked the synagogue entrance, prompting criticism from political leaders.
Mamdani condemned the aggressive behavior while highlighting that sacred spaces should not be used to promote actions violating international law, referring to the organizations promotion of Israeli settlements in occupied territories. Law enforcement, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, faced scrutiny over security measures during the protest.
Reassuring New Yorks Jewish Community
Mamdani has sought to reassure Jewish residents, who make up roughly 10% of the citys population. In the general election, fewer than a third of Jewish voters supported him. As mayor, he plans to enhance synagogue security and strengthen funding for hate-crime prevention programs to address rising antisemitism.
FDNY Leadership and Police Commissioner
Tuckers resignation comes shortly after Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, also Jewish, confirmed she would remain in her post. Tisch has been credited with crime reductions in the city and comes from a family supportive of Israel. Mamdani has expressed support for her leadership despite previously advocating to "defund the NYPD," a stance he later revised.
Veterans and Community Engagement
Mayor-elect Mamdani recently participated in Veterans Day activities, serving meals and engaging with veterans to discuss his upcoming administrations initiatives. These events underscore his focus on community outreach and public service prior to taking office.
