Fact Check: Obama and Buttigieg did not drop 'Project Unity' plan. The truth revealed.

In November 2025, rumors spread across social media suggesting that former U.S. President Barack Obama and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had launched a plan called Project Unity to increase support for Democratic candidates. The posts claimed the two Democrats publicly announced the initiative, with C-SPAN cameras allegedly capturing Obama during the announcement. Buttigieg was quoted as saying: "Donald calls it chaos. We call it a crossroads. This project is our blueprint: secure borders without cruelty, jobs without exploitation. And if Washington can't get it done we will."

According to the posts, a short video clip went viral on X, supposedly boosting Democrats support by 16 points in swing states. Some posts also linked to advertisement-heavy articles discussing the alleged Obama-Buttigieg collaboration.

However, no evidence exists to confirm that such a plan was publicly announced. Searches on C-SPAN and major search engines including Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo returned no credible reports about Project Unity. Reputable media outlets have not covered any collaboration of this kind between Obama and Buttigieg. Consequently, the claim has been rated false.

Artificial intelligence tools played a role in spreading the misinformation. Some posts contained AI-generated text and images, featuring exaggerated language like "48 seconds of White House fire that might seal Dems the crown in 2028" and "like a loaded gun", intended to provoke emotional reactions. AI-detection tools, including GPTZero and Sightengine, indicated a high likelihood that both text and images were generated artificially. For example, images showing Obama and Buttigieg shaking hands were flagged as probable AI creations with signs such as unnaturally smooth skin and awkward poses.

Additional analysis revealed patterns associated with misinformation. Facebook pages sharing these posts were largely managed by individuals based in Vietnam, a country previously linked to the creation of fabricated AI-generated stories involving public figures. Another page shared a nearly identical false story about Obama and U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, also featuring a so-called Project Unity and likely AI-generated imagery.

While the origin of the posts is unclear, they appear designed to generate engagement and advertising revenue. Snopes contacted the Obama Foundation for comment and will update the report if a response is received.
