In a rare off-cycle election Tuesday, Democrat Aftyn Behn reduced President Donald Trumps previous lead in a traditionally Republican Tennessee House district. The results highlight growing voter frustration with Republican control as the nation looks toward next years critical midterms.
With 95% of votes counted, Behn trailed Republican Matt Van Epps 45% to 54% in the highly watched contest. Although Van Epps secured the seat, the slimmer-than-expected margin provided a morale boost for Democrats aiming to regain the House majority in 2026.
The outcome underscored challenges for House Speaker Mike Johnson, as Van Epps significantly underperformed compared to Trumps 22-point victory in the district last year. Behn ran a well-funded campaign emphasizing affordability, attracting voters dissatisfied with rising costs.
Democratic strategists quickly pointed to the narrower margin as evidence of momentum heading into next years midterms, when they need to flip three seats to reclaim the House. This district was a Trump stronghold, yet our campaign resonated with everyday issues affecting families, Behn told CNN before the race was called.
Trump celebrated Van Epps victory on Truth Social, calling it a BIG Congressional WIN despite Democrats heavy spending. The race drew unusual national attention due to its timing between Thanksgiving and Christmas, prompting both parties to invest heavily in ads and outreach.
Super PACs from both sides spent millions, with GOP groups outspending Democrats $3.1 million to $2.3 million. Republican ads targeted Behn on cultural issues, while Democratic messaging highlighted affordability, health care, and Van Epps association with the Epstein files. Trump personally intervened, supporting Van Epps during the primary and encouraging voters through virtual appearances.
Democrats also mobilized notable figures. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and former Vice President Al Gore supported Behn through rallies and virtual events. Her focus on reducing costs for essentials and health care remained central throughout the campaign.
Aftyn Behns strong showing in a district Trump won by 22 points is a historic signal for Republicans heading into the midterms, said DNC Chair Ken Martin. Despite Van Epps win, the Republican Partys confidence was shaken, especially given the narrow margin in a district considered safely red.
Republicans noted that special elections often favor Democrats, and the post-Thanksgiving timing likely affected turnout. Some GOP insiders privately expressed concern about the implications for the 2026 cycle, suggesting that party unity and strategic campaigning will be crucial.
Democrats hope Behns modelfocusing on affordability and connecting with rural voterscan be replicated in other districts, including the neighboring 5th District, where Trump previously won by 18 points. Her campaign emphasized tangible issues affecting families, a message Democrats aim to carry nationwide next year.
While Republicans celebrated holding the seat, the results served as a reminder of potential vulnerabilities in districts once considered secure. Both parties are now gearing up for a high-stakes midterm election, with attention on turnout, messaging, and voter engagement.
