Aftyn Behn, a state representative from Tennessee, is defying expectations by narrowing the gap with her Republican rival in a heavily Republican district while maintaining a strong progressive stance. In 2024, Rep. Mark Green, who stepped down from Congress earlier this year, carried the district by a 22-point margin. According to a survey conducted Wednesday, Behn is now trailing Matt Van Epps, the Republican nominee, by only 2 points.
Behns campaign challenges a growing assumption among many Democrats that winning requires nominating more centrist candidates, similar to former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who ended his career as an independent. Instead, Behns appeal in the district, covering much of Nashville and central Tennessee, is rooted in a progressive platform aimed at improving conditions for the working class, while rejecting contributions from corporate PACs and special interests.
Her campaign faces significant opposition from the national Republican infrastructure. As of December 2, Republican PACs had allocated $2.3 million to attack Behn and support Van Epps, while national Democratic groups have invested $1.8 million, seeing an opportunity to reduce the GOPs shrinking House majority.
In an interview with Salon, Behn described the pressure from Republican attacks as akin to having the Republican eye of Sauron breathing down my neck. She emphasized that, despite these efforts, voters in the district recognize the negative impact of the current Republican majority. For my neighbors relying on TennCare, the cuts from the recent budget are a matter of life and death, she said, referring to legislation passed earlier this year. Behn pledged to vote to restore Medicaid funding and support Affordable Care Act subsidies, measures she believes could save lives in her district.
Behn also explained that connecting with moderate Republicans does not require following conventional political strategies. She stressed that voters are pluralistic, not simply moderate, and that authenticity is key. After knocking on thousands of doors and discussing tough issues, its clear people hold a range of views, she said. Behn noted that rural residents often have populist leanings, and policies like holding multinational corporations accountable resonate strongly with working families.
Behn, who began her political career as a community organizer focused on health care, hopes her campaign will serve as a turning point for working-class activism in Tennessee. She highlighted state-level concerns, such as Tennessees grocery tax, as common complaints among her constituents. She believes that this kind of grassroots organizing is essential not only for winning special elections but also for making districts like Tennessees Seventh more competitive in future high-turnout elections.
She argued that the Democratic Party could win such districts by embracing a pro-worker and anti-corporate message. The choice is clear: do we continue to be funded by the same corporations that are selling out workers, or do we lead the charge to defend working families? Behn said.
