Former Steelers Cornerback Darius Slay Discusses Parting Ways with Pittsburgh

Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Darius Slay has shared his perspective on leaving the team, revealing the factors behind the decision to part ways with the franchise.

Slays exit from the Steelers was described as a mutual choice this week. Speaking on the Speakeasy podcast, he explained, It was a mutual decision. Coach Tomlin and I discussed it, and we felt it was best for both sides. I have nothing but respect for him and the organization. Things didnt go as planned, but theres no bad blood. Hes a great coach and person, and after 13 years, we understood each other well.

After his release, Slay was claimed by the Buffalo Bills, though he has not yet decided whether he will continue playing football. According to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, He appreciates being picked up by such a reputable team, but he wants to take some time away from football before making a final decision.

Despite speculation linking him to a potential return to Philadelphia, Slay clarified that his choice is personal. It mostly comes down to family. Ive been missing many of my childrens activities, so this is about them. Im on the fence about continuing, and Ill see where it goes, he stated.

Slay joined the Steelers with expectations of starting at cornerback this season but gradually lost his spot on the active roster. He began the first nine games, but a concussion on November 9 sidelined him the following week. Backup James Pierre stepped in effectively, and despite Tomlins initial plans for Slay to return as starter, Pierre continued in the role. In the most recent game against Buffalo, Slay was a healthy scratch while Asante Samuel Jr. was promoted.

Before joining Pittsburgh, Slay spent five years with the Philadelphia Eagles as a starting outside cornerback, contributing to their Super Bowl LIX championship run. He started 14 games in the previous regular season and added four postseason appearances, finishing with 49 tackles, three tackles for loss, 13 passes defended, one forced fumble, and one interception in the Wild Card win over the Packers.

Slays career began with the Detroit Lions, who drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State. He spent seven seasons in Detroit and earned six Pro Bowl selections, including a first-team All-Pro honor in 2017 when he led the NFL in interceptions.
