Bills reportedly pick up Darius Slay after Steelers release him mid-season

The Buffalo Bills have claimed veteran cornerback Darius Slay off waivers, just one day after he and the Pittsburgh Steelers mutually agreed to part ways. The decision came amid defensive struggles for Pittsburgh during the middle of the season.

Slay signed with the Steelers earlier this year on a one-season contract but was placed on waivers Tuesday as both sides decided to move on. By Wednesday, Buffalo completed a claim to bring the six-time Pro Bowler into their secondary.

According to reports, Pittsburgh is preparing to promote Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad to fill the vacancy left by Slay. The team is also expected to add wide receiver Adam Thielen after his recent release from Minnesota.

Slay has been sidelined since Nov. 9 with a concussion that kept him out of Week 11, and although he was later removed from injury designation, he was listed as a healthy scratch during the Steelers' recent loss to Buffalo. Prior to joining Pittsburgh, he spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles winning a Super Bowl and another four with the Detroit Lions.

The Steelers, now 6-6, have hit a difficult stretch defensively, drawing heavy criticism from fans after their defeat to Buffalo. Head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the frustration surrounding the team, stating that performance naturally affects public sentiment. Despite the backlash, Tomlins tenure includes 18 straight seasons without a losing record, though Pittsburgh must win at least three of its remaining five games to extend that streak.
