In a surprising twist surrounding the release of Sean Combs: The Reckoning, Diddy and his legal team claim that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, rather than Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, orchestrated the documentary in retaliation against Combs. The accusations were detailed in a December 1 cease-and-desist letter sent to Netflix executive David Hyman by Combs attorneys, addressing the newly released four-part series.
The letter asserts that in 2023, Sarandos proposed a documentary about Combs, but the music mogul rejected the idea due to conditions that would have stripped him of creative control. Netflixs decision to appoint Mr. Jackson as producer was a retaliatory move aimed at creating a biased and damaging portrayal of Mr. Combs, the correspondence stated.
Combs lawyers further claim the series exaggerates or fabricates negative allegations, including accusations of sexual misconduct and violence. They argue participants in the series were allegedly incentivized to depict Combs unfavorably, violating his privacy and existing legal agreements.
Although 50 Cent has previously been publicly critical of Combs, including announcing his own documentary project and opposing a potential Trump pardon following Combs July 2 conviction for transportation to engage in prostitution, the letter emphasizes that he is not involved in The Reckoning.
Currently serving time at Fort Dix FCI in New Jersey, Combs is eligible for release in June 2028. Amid ongoing legal scrutiny, including a recent Los Angeles Sheriffs investigation into a 2020 sexual battery allegation, his legal team is assessing options regarding Netflixs series. After reviewing the content, Seans team is considering the best course of legal action, Combs representatives told Deadline.
Netflix declined to comment on Combs legal threats. Director Alexandria Stapleton, whose work features behind-the-scenes footage of Combs, defended the series, stating the footage was obtained legally and that the production holds the necessary rights.
Despite heavy promotion, viewership numbers for Sean Combs: The Reckoning have not been disclosed. The series is expected to appear on Netflixs domestic Top 10 chart soon, with international rankings to be revealed next week.
As the documentary garners attention, Combs faces numerous ongoing civil suits and potential legal battles stemming from allegations of sexual assault, violence, and other misconduct. The situation could escalate further beyond the current cease-and-desist letters and public statements.
