Sabrina Carpenter Moves on from Disney Fame Amid NSFW Lyrics Backlash

Sabrina Carpenter recently opened up about the criticism she's faced over the bold and explicit lyrics in her latest album, Mans Best Friend. She believes that her early fame with Disney has played a significant role in the backlash shes receiving. Many people continue to associate her with her role as Maya Hart in Girl Meets World, making it difficult for them to view her as an adult artist with a distinct identity.

In an interview with Variety, Carpenter shared her thoughts on how her past with Disney influences the response to her more mature music. She acknowledged that many still see her as a "childhood figure," which hinders their ability to accept her evolving artistic persona. She said, It wouldnt matter as much if I werent seen as a childhood figure, but I cant change that. I didnt choose to start working when I was 12, and now people wont let me grow up.

Reflecting on her own experiences, Carpenter revealed that she was exposed to NSFW music from female artists during her youth, but that never made her feel rushed to grow up. While she understands the concerns of her younger fans, she emphasized that they can interpret her lyrics in their own way, waiting until theyre older to fully grasp the meanings. I used to think, When I grow up, Ill understand my sexuality more. Im not sure they understand it yet either, she explained. I wish we could have more open discussions about this when I was younger, but its a subject that many people are afraid to address.

Addressing the criticism head-on, the singer-songwriter explained, People assume Ill do or say anything. But no, I do have boundaries. Im just living my life, and youre watching it. If you dont like it, thats okay. If you do, then lets have fun with it.

Carpenter also expressed her desire to live freely without holding back, doing what she loves. I wore the skirts I wanted to wear, I spoke my truth in ways I wont regret. Being open and true to myself is what matters most, she added.
