A woman whose husband tragically drowned in the River Severn is dedicating her time this Christmas to assist with river safety patrols in Shrewsbury, working alongside the charity that recovered his body.
Kirsty Walshs husband, Shane, passed away in 2017 after a night out. In the wake of his death, Kirsty became an ambassador for West Mercia Search and Rescue, an organization that helps with searches for missing individuals, water rescues, flood responses, and supporting people in life-threatening situations.
"Since Shanes passing, Ive been determined to leave a meaningful legacy for our children and raise awareness in his honor," said Ms. Walsh.
Throughout December, on Fridays and Saturdays, she will join the charitys Home and Dry patrols, which aim to assist anyone in danger near the river and promote safety by discouraging risky behavior around the water.
"Im proud to take part in the Home and Dry initiative and will continue working to raise awareness and prevent further tragedies," she added.
The river patrols are coordinated by West Mercia Search and Rescue, with support from West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
"If we can help even one person take extra precautions to stay safe, these patrols are successful," stated volunteer Mark Eccleston. "Drowning claims too many lives every year, and the effects on families are devastating."
Inspector Ingrid Tozer of West Mercia Police remarked: "Our goal is for everyone to enjoy a safe and happy Christmas. We are proud to back Kirsty and the volunteers from West Mercia Search and Rescue, who give their time freely to protect others. Remember, if a friend has been drinking, stay well clear."
