South Florida is set to experience unusually warm temperatures this week, approaching historic highs. CBS News Miami, a news partner of the Miami Herald, reports that Tuesday could see temperatures soar to 85F, just two degrees shy of the 87F record for December 2 established in 1902. Typically, early December highs hover around 80F.
The National Weather Service in Miami predicts a slightly cooler high of 83F for Tuesday, aligning with Weather Undergrounds forecast. The peak warmth is expected from midday to late afternoon.
Extended South Florida Forecast
Forecasters generally agree on mostly sunny and breezy conditions throughout the week, with daytime highs in the low 80s and nighttime lows in the low 70s. A modest cold front will pass through on Wednesday, briefly lowering highs to around 80F and morning lows to the upper 60s on Thursday and Friday, before temperatures rebound to the low 80s during the weekend.
There is a 20% chance of rain in South Florida after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with wind gusts potentially reaching 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
In the Florida Keys, temperatures are expected to remain steady in the low 80s during the day and low 70s at night from Tuesday through Sunday, with only a 10% chance of rain over the weekend.
Beach and Safety Advisory
The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk for coastal beaches in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties through 7 p.m. Tuesday. Swimmers are advised to exercise caution. Key safety tips include:
- Swim near lifeguards whenever possible.
- If caught in a rip current, stay calm and float.
- Do not attempt to swim directly against the current.
- Try swimming parallel to the shoreline to escape the current.
- If unable to exit, face the shore and signal for help.
Warm weather may tempt many to enjoy the beach, but caution is advised to stay safe in the water.
