Court told man accused of murder was 'innocent'

A man facing charges of fatally stabbing a friend after consuming alcohol and cocaine has been portrayed as fundamentally non-violent by his closest companion.

Alfie Miller, from Willow Drive in Durrington, is standing trial at Winchester Crown Court, accused of murdering 52-year-old Darren Hughes, an allegation he denies. Mr. Hughes was discovered by neighbors with a fatal knife wound in his bathroom on Davies Road in Salisbury, Wiltshire, around 07:45 BST on 3 May.

Testifying on Wednesday, Thomas London, who considers himself "best friends" with both men, told the court he had never witnessed violent behavior from 22-year-old Miller.

Neighbors previously reported seeing Mr. Miller outside Mr. Hughes' flat on 3 May, claiming he had "stabbed someone." Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called, but Mr. Hughes was pronounced dead at 08:45 BST.

Mr. London explained that he met Miller while working together at Home Bargains at age 16 and described him as "like a brother." He added, "I knew Alfie better than anyone else. The Alfie I know is harmless."

The court heard that Mr. London introduced Miller to Mr. Hughes, and the two men would often gather at Mr. Hughes' flat to drink and occasionally use cocaine. Mr. London admitted he was unaware of any meetings between them without his presence. He also noted that Miller used cocaine regularly, spending approximately 200-400 per week, sometimes consuming large amounts in a short period. While under the influence, Miller would become paranoid and uncertain.

The trial is ongoing.
