Planning permission has been secured for the construction of 42 sheltered homes intended for residents over the age of 55. The development is set to take place at the St Joseph's Care Home site on St John's Road in St Helier, following a successful appeal that overturned a previous refusal by the Planning Committee in July.

The appeal was assessed by independent planning inspector Philip Staddon, who recommended approval. He highlighted the strong community support for the project and the urgent demand for additional care housing for older residents in Jersey.

Steve Luce, the Minister for the Environment, agreed with the recommendation, emphasizing that the decision underscores the need to offer high-quality housing options for older islanders.

Inspector Staddon noted that the proposal aligns with the "rightsizing" policy, which focuses on providing suitable homes for later life while freeing larger properties for families. He acknowledged the complex planning considerations, particularly as the site lies within the green backdrop zone designed to protect the local landscape. After review, he concluded that the project would not adversely affect the area's character.

Minister Luce added that the development will address the clear need for sheltered accommodation, promote independent living for older people, and demonstrate that thoughtfully designed housing can be integrated without harming the island's visual landscape.
