Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding an Afghan man who allegedly shot two members of the National Guard, killing one. Homeland Security Secretary indicated that the suspect may have been radicalized while in the United States.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, had previously worked in a specialized counterterrorism unit affiliated with the CIA during the conflict in Afghanistan. He arrived in the United States in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year.
Following the shooting in Washington, the Trump administration intensified its immigration policies. Officials temporarily suspended Afghan immigration cases and all pending asylum applications, while also announcing plans to review large numbers of green card approvals.
However, an editorial in The Wall Street Journal warned that punishing Afghan refugees as a group would not enhance national security.
