In Richmond, Virginia, a Lowe's store manager, Mike Sida, had a beloved staff member: Francine the cat. Although she wasn't very friendly at first, Francine eventually won over the hearts of the team. "She became a part of everyone's daily routine," said Sida, reflecting on her charm. This former stray had become an iconic figure in the garden department, beloved by locals for nearly ten years. However, one day, Francine disappeared.
Wayne Schneider, an employee who cared for Francine, had a sinking feeling that something was wrong. "I just had this gut feeling," Schneider shared. His suspicion grew when he considered the possibility that Francine might have accidentally been shipped out on a freight truck heading to a massive Lowe's distribution center in Statesville, North Carolina, located about 85 miles away. If Francine had boarded the truck, she could be anywhere in the vast warehouse, hidden among pallets or in the numerous trucks lining the lot. Schneider feared she might never be found. "Maybe they opened the trailer, and she slipped out," he worried.
Determined to find her, Schneider reached out for help from Preston Bullock and Taylor Taconet, warehouse managers at the distribution center. "As long as there's hope, we're going to support it," Bullock remarked. Taconet added, "When a family member is missing, it's all hands on deck." They threw everything they had at the search.
The team began by tempting Francine with her favorite food, Fancy Feast, and even employed a thermal drone to scan the massive distribution center from the sky. They also used a high-tech 360-degree camera to inspect the area, but no luck. Their efforts seemed futile until a breakthrough came when surveillance footage captured a blurry image of Francine near a parking area for cargo trucks.
"I nearly cried," said Taconet, overwhelmed by the relief. "We finally saw her."
Schneider was overjoyed upon hearing the news. "Tears just started flowing," he said, recalling the emotional moment of discovery. The team immediately made plans to retrieve her. Schneider and Sida traveled to the distribution center in North Carolina, where they found Francine and brought her back to Richmond, marking her triumphant return to her home.
Now, Francine is once again roaming the aisles of the Richmond Lowe's, greeting customers and maintaining her role as the store's unofficial mascot. "It feels great to have her back where she belongs," Sida said with a smile.
