A Republican lawmaker in California was recorded on a live microphone expressing concerns over election strategy following the states approval of a new redistricting measure. Last month, voters in California decisively passed Proposition 50, which reshapes the congressional map and is expected to favor Democrats with additional House seats.
The initiative was seen as a counter to similar redistricting efforts in Texas designed to benefit Republicans. Several other states have explored comparable strategies.
Under the new boundaries, two Republican incumbents in California will face off against each other. According to Politico, Representative Ken Calvert from the 41st District intends to challenge Representative Young Kim from the 40th District. The revised 40th District will encompass more than half of Calverts current constituency.
On Thursday, Representative Darrell Issa of the 48th District attended a signing ceremony for a peace agreement involving Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with President Donald Trump. Shortly before the event, Issa was captured on camera discussing the upcoming 40th District race. He appeared to hint that the Trump administration would prefer if Kim opted not to run, effectively giving Calvert control of the newly drawn district.
Ken has nowhere else to go, Issa remarked. [Kim] has a challenging district she could consider, and the administration would likely view that favorably. If she doesnt succeed, she could turn to the administration for a two-year period. Ken is crucial in his current seat, which mostly overlaps with the new district. If anyone had a stronger claim, it would be me.
Reports also noted that Issa had briefly considered relocating to Texas to secure reelection but has since abandoned that plan.
