A detailed report compiled by current and former federal agents has sharply criticized the FBI under Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, describing the bureau as chaotic and mismanaged during their tenure. The 115-page document, highlighted by The New York Posts Miranda Devine, comes from the National Alliance of Retired and Active-Duty FBI Special Agents and Analysts.
The report portrays Patel as insecure, lacking confidence, and unfit to lead, while Bongino is labeled a "clown." This pulse check report was recently submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA).
Key Findings From the Report
- Patel refused to leave a plane without a female agents jacket: After a flight landed in Utah following the murder of Charlie Kirk, Patel allegedly would not disembark until a medium-sized FBI jacket was provided. Agents scrambled to meet his demand, eventually supplying a jacket from a female agent. He also delayed leaving the plane due to missing Velcro patches, which SWAT team members sourced for him.
- Email signature hypocrisy: Patel instructed agents to remove pronouns and messages from email signatures but kept his own signature, which included #9, signaling his role as the FBIs 9th director. This caused agents to mock what they perceived as inconsistency.
- Culture of mistrust: The report notes that FBI staff are demoralized and fearful, operating under mistrust and uncertainty. Agents reportedly make decisions based on fear of losing jobs, with a pervasive sense of unease about reassignment or termination.
- Obsession with social media: Both Patel and Bongino were criticized for their frequent use of social media, often learning about FBI developments online rather than through official channels. Agents said the leaders appear focused on enhancing their personal profiles rather than bureau operations.
- Polygraph orders over firearm discussion: Patel reportedly demanded polygraph tests for agents who discussed whether he should receive an FBI firearm. Opinions among agents were mixed, and the tests were described as punitive, though the outcomes remain undisclosed.
- Bonginos controversial remark: Agents were reportedly shocked when Bongino declared, The truth is for chumps, during a meeting at a western FBI office. Several staff found the comment offensive and inappropriate.
Additional observations in the report include concerns about staff suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and frustration over being assigned duties related to ICE operations. The full report provides further details on the internal challenges facing the FBI under Patel and Bongino.
