XG's Cocona Reveals Transmasculine Non-Binary Identity on 20th Birthday

Cocona, a member of the Japanese girl group XG, has revealed that they are transmasculine non-binary, sharing a personal letter with fans to mark their 20th birthday. The rapper, singer, and performer posted an emotional message on Instagram on Saturday, reflecting on self-discovery, personal growth, and acceptance.

Today I turn 20, Cocona wrote. As I step into this new chapter, I want to open up about something that has been in my heart for a long time. I am AFAB transmasculine non-binary. Earlier this year, I underwent top surgery. I was assigned female at birth, but that label never matched who I truly am.

Cocona added, Accepting and embracing myself has been the hardest challenge of my life Now, I can confidently say, There is nothing wrong with who I am inside.

The performer also expressed appreciation for their XG bandmates, XGALX founder and producer Simon (Jakops), and their parents, acknowledging that their support was vital throughout this journey. Fans and members of the LGBTQIA+ community responded with an outpouring of love and admiration. The post included emojis symbolizing unity and infinity and concluded with, May these words gently light a spark in someones heart. And to everyone who needs it may my love reach all of them.

Following Coconas announcement, Simon (Jakops), CEO and artistic director of XGALX, shared his own statement on Instagram, expressing respect and support. I am deeply moved and filled with respect as Cocona courageously shared their truth with the world, he said. I will continue to provide genuine support so that each member can be truly respected not only as an artist but also as an individual.

Simon highlighted the groups growth, noting that all members have reached adulthood, and emphasized that XG aims to showcase the pure and essential heart of each member beyond music and visuals.

Since debuting under XGALX in 2022, XG has gained international attention for their polished performances, multilingual songs, and message of empowerment. Coconas coming-out represents a meaningful moment for LGBTQ+ visibility in the global pop scene, particularly within the Japanese and Korean entertainment industries, where discussions about gender identity continue to progress.
