Kendrick Lamar Recorded Almost 100 Songs for ‘GNX’

Kendrick Lamars upcoming album GNX was initially far more expansive than the 12 tracks it eventually featured. In a recent Variety interview with Grammy-winning producers Sounwave, Jack Antonoff, and Mustard, it was revealed that Lamar recorded between 80 and 100 songs for the project, according to Sounwave.

Antonoff described their collaborative chemistry: Sounwave and I have a language all our own. When the three of us connect, its something rare and magical.

Lamar began working on his sixth studio album shortly after releasing Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2022. Sounwave reflected on the creative process, saying it began like throwing paint on a wall before evolving into a massive, funky West Coast groove influenced by their shared Compton roots. This direction inspired them to involve other talented collaborators to elevate the sound even further.

Mustard discussed his unique contributions, particularly the beat switch on TV Off. He intentionally provided Lamar with unconventional instrumentals, experimenting with sounds he had never made before, without worrying about how they would be combined. Sounwave confirmed that merging the two separate beats for TV Off was Lamars own idea.

The team also touched on the creation of the chart-topping track Luther, which Sounwave described as a spiritual process.

Several tracks from the album, including GNX, TV Off, and Luther, have collectively earned seven Grammy nominations for the upcoming 68th Annual Grammy Awards.
