Jillian Lauren, the acclaimed author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, has officially filed for divorce following 20 years of marriage. Court documents obtained by People indicate that Lauren cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for ending the union. The couple, married in November 2005, share two sons: Jovanni Starshine, 13, and Tariku Moon, 17.
Lauren is requesting both joint legal and physical custody of their children. She has also applied for spousal support while asking the court to terminate Shriners eligibility to receive any spousal support. In addition, she is seeking to legally restore her maiden name, Lauren, rather than retain Shriners surname.
No official statements have been provided yet by representatives of either Lauren or Shriner.
Background on Legal Proceedings
The divorce filing comes after Lauren was granted entry into a two-year mental health diversion program. Upon successful completion of the program, a judge is expected to dismiss the two felony charges she faced related to a gunfire incident with LAPD officers outside her Eagle Rock home on April 8. Authorities say Lauren fired first during the standoff.
According to the LAPD, officers were conducting a search for hit-and-run suspects in a neighboring yard when Lauren allegedly fired her weapon at them. She was shot in the shoulder by responding officers and subsequently hospitalized for treatment. Lauren was later released on $1 million bail, facing charges including attempted murder, which were eventually modified to gross negligence and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. She pled not guilty in May.
Laurens legal team, including Hilary Lee Potashner and Georgina Wakefield, stated that they were satisfied with the outcome of the diversion program, which allows for the potential dismissal of charges upon completion. Judge Susan J. De Witt of Los Angeles County Superior Court approved Laurens eligibility for this program, marking a pivotal step in resolving her legal case.
