Quentin Tarantino Shares List of Actors He Considers 'Weak Sauce'

Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino did not hold back in expressing his blunt opinions about certain actors in Hollywood. During a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, he discussed his personal rankings of the best films of the 21st century and revealed actors he doesnt particularly respect.

Tarantino highlighted There Will Be Blood (2007) by Paul Thomas Anderson as his fifth favorite film of the century. While praising the movie overall, he pointed out what he considered a major flaw: Paul Danos performance as the twin brothers, Paul and Eli Sunday, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis commanding portrayal of Daniel Plainview.

The film could easily be first or second on my list if it werent for one glaring issue, Tarantino explained. That issue is Paul Dano. The movie is meant to be a two-hander, but its painfully clear it isnt. He is weak sauce. Day-Lewis is devouring him on screen. Austin Butler would have been perfect for the part.

Describing Dano, Tarantino continued, Hes just weak, uninteresting. Daniel Day-Lewis doesnt need a strong counterpart, but the movie does. Dano fails to deliver the necessary presence.

Even when Ellis suggested Danos performance could be overshadowed by Day-Lewis massive role, Tarantino didnt hold back: So you pair him with the weakest actor in SAG? The limpest guy in the world?

When asked if he thought Dano did a poor job, Tarantino clarified, Im not saying its a terrible performance. Im saying its a non-entity. I dont care for him.

He also mentioned other actors he is not fond of, including Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard.

Besides There Will Be Blood, Tarantinos top 10 films of the 21st century included:

  1. Black Hawk Down (2001, Ridley Scott)
  2. Toy Story 3
  3. Lost in Translation (2003, Sofia Coppola)
  4. There Will Be Blood (2007, Paul Thomas Anderson)
  5. Unstoppable
  6. Shaun of the Dead
  7. Midnight in Paris
