Hamilton Star to Work on Horror Film About Sammy Davis Jr. and the Church of Satan

Leslie Odom Jr., celebrated for his work in Hamilton, is reportedly turning a recent Rolling Stone article about Sammy Davis Jr. into a horror feature. Odom is also expected to take on a leading role in the film, which will delve into the late entertainers rumored ties with Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan.

Odom Acquires Rights to Controversial Article

The Tony and Grammy-winning performer has secured the rights to Alex Bhattacharjis August 2024 article, which examined Davis alleged involvement with the Church of Satan. The adaptation aims to depict the events that supposedly led Davis into this shadowy world.

Titled Dance With the Devil, Bhattacharjis piece emphasized Davis unusual friendship with Anton LaVey, the notorious Church of Satan founder. The article describes it as a story of a deeply isolated Davis searching for acceptance, touching on themes of racial and sexual identity, religion, politics, pop culture, and countercultural movements.

Controversial Origins

The original article caused significant stir among fans due to its provocative claims. One excerpt notes that Davis maintained a connection to Satanism spanning two decades, including a lasting friendship with LaVey, even toward the end of his life.

Other Projects on Davis

Separately, Miramax is developing a biopic about Sammy Davis Jr., titled Scandalous!, starring Sydney Sweeney and Colman Domingo. This is an entirely different production from Odoms horror adaptation.

Further details regarding Leslie Odom Jr.s project are expected to be released in the near future.
