Donyelle Jones, a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance, has died 10 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer, according to her official Instagram page. She was 46.
Benji Schwimmer, who won season 2 of the show and danced alongside Jones, paid tribute to his longtime dance partner with a heartfelt video shared on Instagram. Schwimmer, 41, reflected on their deep bond and the special moments they shared during the competition in 2006.
The video combined archival footage from their time on the show with Schwimmer speaking about their friendship. He described a dream in which he danced with Jones, calling her radiant and illuminated in a way that only dreams can create. Schwimmer recounted seeing Jones in person just before Thanksgiving, cherishing the memory of her smiling and laughing despite her illness.
Donyelles official Instagram announcement confirmed that she "transitioned" at 8:34 a.m. She had been diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer in 2016, which eventually advanced to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She was remembered as "a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a warrior who fought cancer every single day." Her spirit and kindness were praised in the statement, noting that "even in the storm, she never lost her smile."
Schwimmer highlighted Joness impact on both his life and the dance world. He spoke of her ability to maintain joy in a competitive environment and her role in helping him gain self-confidence. "She taught me to embrace my body, to laugh through awkward moments, and to work hard to be my best self," he said.
Reflecting on their partnership, Schwimmer noted, "It's not a marriage, but sometimes it feels closer than that because you share your most elevated and vulnerable moments together." He expressed gratitude for their time together and emphasized that Jones inspired him and countless others.
Schwimmer concluded by honoring Joness legacy, promising to continue celebrating her life and contributions to dance. "I look forward to honoring my friend, my forever partner in dance. I love you, Donyelle," he said.
