Significant conservation efforts have started to protect a centuries-old harbour and its quay. According to Historic England, crucial restoration work is being carried out on the stone parapet of the Old Quay in Newlyn, Cornwall, to ensure its structural stability for the foreseeable future.

Specialist contractors are employing traditional techniques to replicate the original materials used in the quays construction, maintaining historical authenticity. A project representative described the Old Quay as "a treasured part of Newlyn" and emphasized that the restoration is essential for preserving the area's medieval heritage.

The spokesperson added, "Securing Heritage England funding has enabled us to hire experts who can carry out a faithful historical restoration. This work goes beyond simple repairs; it is an investment in protecting a key piece of our shared medieval past."

In addition, the Red Lion Slip is undergoing a significant upgrade, including resurfacing with sturdy granite setts from St Just, improving accessibility to the harbour.

Historic England stated that the harbour works are expected to be completed by March 2026. Meanwhile, the Cornwall Maritime Trust will complete the refurbishment of the old fishermen's rest, transforming it into the trusts new operational base. This facility will support traditional lugger sailing courses using the 143-year-old historic vessel, Barnabas, allowing more people to experience maritime heritage first-hand.
