Renovation of Jennette’s Pier to be completed by spring

NAGS HEAD, N.C. Beginning December 8, parts of Jennettes Pier will be temporarily closed to allow for significant improvements, according to an official announcement. The renovation plan features a much-expanded observation deck and the replacement of the piers deck boards with fiber-reinforced polymer for enhanced longevity.

Mike Remige, director of the pier, stated that the upgraded platform will enable the Coastal Studies Institute to accommodate larger and more sophisticated observation instruments. Currently, the piers observation deck hosts WeatherFlow, a meteorological system that records wind speed and direction, humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure. Real-time weather data from the pier is available online, showing conditions inside the pier house and along the pier itself.

After the rooftop deck is completed at the end of January, the pier will close briefly so that the new decking can be fully installed. Renovation work will start at the far end of the pier and move westward to ensure that the new boards are not used before inspection. This temporary restriction on access is planned during the off-season to minimize disruption.

The entire construction project is projected to wrap up by spring, aiming for completion by May, coinciding with the start of the spring fishing season. The pier will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of March.
