A prominent food bank in southern Scotland, known for distributing hundreds of food parcels weekly, has been compelled to close its main location due to serious breaches of hygiene regulations. The environmental health team of Dumfries and Galloway Council (DGC) identified these issues at the First Base Agency in Dumfries.
The council emphasized that it has been collaborating with the organization to ensure that support continues from an alternative site within the town. Mark Frankland, director of the agency, acknowledged disappointment over the closure but confirmed that services have not been disrupted and a new location has already been secured.
The First Base Agency, based for many years on Buccleuch Street, typically distributes around 1,000 food parcels monthly. During the first year of the Covid pandemic, it expanded operations to meet rising demand, assisting approximately 22,500 people.
The hygiene violations, reportedly involving the handling of fresh food, were discovered during a routine inspection of the premises. A statement from DGC explained, "Following an inspection by the council's environmental health team, the First Base Agency food bank at Buccleuch Street, Dumfries, was closed due to significant breaches of food hygiene regulations."
Despite the closure, the food bank confirmed that its operations were uninterrupted. Several council departments have been working with the agency to ensure that services are provided from facilities that comply with required food hygiene standards.
Mr. Frankland reiterated that no one in need has gone without food parcels during this transition. "While we are disappointed that our Buccleuch Street building was deemed unsuitable for distributing food parcels, we are pleased that Independent Living Support is now managing our food distribution in the town centre," he said. The new distribution point is located on George Street Meuse.
