Adaptations of Books for Screens are not only profitable for Studios and Networks — Audiobooks are also experiencing a surge in popularity

As December begins, many dedicated audio enthusiasts eagerly check their streaming platforms to review a years worth of listening. Spotifys annual Wrapped feature, known for its social media buzz, returns this week, offering insights not only into favorite songs but also into trends in spoken-word content.

This year, Spotify Wrapped highlights audiobooks for the first time. Since launching its audiobook service in 2023, Spotify has allowed U.S. Premium subscribers 15 hours per month to explore a library exceeding 500,000 titles. The rise of book-to-screen adaptations has coincided with noticeable growth in audiobook consumption.

Exclusive data shared with IndieWire reveals that more than 60 of Spotify Premiums top 100 audiobooks are either already adapted for screen or in production for adaptation. Leading titles include Rebecca Yarross Fourth Wing series, Alison Espachs The Wedding People, Callie Harts Quicksilver, Freida McFaddens thrillers like The Housemaid and The Tenant, along with popular romance audiobooks such as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Atmosphere, and Funny Story.

Book-to-screen adaptations are reigniting interest across formats, which is reflected in audiobook listening trends, said Rebecca McGuire of Spotify Audiobooks Partnerships and Licensing. As audiences explore these narratives, were emphasizing discovery tools, curated playlists, and editorial content to highlight the stories shaping culture. Audiobooks are rapidly becoming a key part of Spotifys cultural influence.

Listeners often engage with audiobooks both before and after adaptations premiere. Spotify observed significant spikes in audiobook streams following screen releases. For example, streams of May Cobbs The Hunting Wives surged by 609% after its Netflix series launch, while Lois Duncans I Know What You Did Last Summer rose 521% following the film sequel.

Additionally, first-time audiobook listeners are increasing. In 2025, over half of Spotify Premium subscribers sampled an audiobook, many trying the format for the first time, while the catalog continues to expand beyond 500,000 titles.
