A brand-new fully electric passenger ferry, named the Orbit Clipper, has begun operating on the River Thames. Designed to recharge overnight, the vessel will shuttle passengers between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe every 10 minutes during weekdays.
The ferry, which can accommodate 150 passengers and up to 100 bicycles, will gradually be integrated into regular service. On weekdays, it will run every 10 minutes from each side, and on weekends, the schedule will be adjusted to 15-minute intervals.
Officials stated that the ferry is a step toward reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2035 and reaching net zero by 2050. London Mayor Sadiq Khan highlighted the environmental and practical benefits, saying the service is not only cleaner but also faster and more accessible for a larger number of commuters.
The launch also coincides with preparations for the World Triathlon Championship Series, set to take place in London next July. Ruth Daniels, CEO of British Triathlon, noted that the Orbit Clipper provides a "unique and efficient route to the start line," while also benefiting cyclists, commuters, tourists, and anyone needing a greener travel option across the city.
With its capacity for both passengers and bicycles, the Orbit Clipper represents a significant step forward in Londons efforts to modernize its river transport while promoting sustainability.
