Myanmar nationals participate in early voting in Bangkok

On Saturday, a small group of Myanmar citizens participated in early voting at the country's embassy in Bangkok, marking the start of polling for those living abroad. The election, widely criticized internationally, comes after the military seized control in a 2021 coup that triggered a complex civil conflict. Authorities claim the election will guide the nation toward stability and democratic governance.

The election will roll out in phases, starting in select regions of Myanmar in late December, but early voting has already started in several overseas embassies, including locations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.

Security was heightened at the Bangkok embassy on Saturday morning. Observers reported about 25 voters registering during the first two hours, while some participants chose not to speak to the press. Thailand's labor ministry states that roughly 500,000 Myanmar nationals are officially documented in the capital, while the International Organization for Migration estimates 4.1 million Myanmar residents in the country, many lacking legal status after fleeing conflict.

Embassy staff were unable to provide exact numbers of voters who had submitted the required registration form before the October 15 deadline. Critics of the junta, including ousted lawmakers, human rights groups, and rebel factions, have dismissed the election as a faade to maintain military dominance. The military administration has also passed stringent legislation ahead of the vote, including penalties of up to ten years in prison for protesting or criticizing the election.
