BERLIN On Friday, German lawmakers approved a government initiative aimed at expanding the country's military personnel amid growing worries over Russia's actions. The strategy includes compulsory health screenings for young men but stops short of reinstating mandatory military service, although limited compulsory enlistment could be considered in exceptional circumstances.
The Bundestag, Germanys lower house of parliament, passed the proposal with 323 votes in favor, 272 against, and one abstention. This legislation represents a revised version of a plan that Chancellor Friedrich Merzs Cabinet introduced in August.
Germany has invested heavily in modernizing its armed forces after years of underfunding, and authorities are now focused on encouraging more citizens to enlist. Similar efforts are underway in other European countries: last week, France announced a program to train thousands of 18- and 19-year-olds starting next year, while Belgium and Poland are also implementing measures to increase military participation.
