On Thursday, the German parliament approved a set of legislative changes aimed at enhancing security at the nations military installations. The new laws expand the authority of military police, base security personnel, and the military intelligence service.
The decision comes after a series of security breaches and threats targeting military facilities. Since Russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine, German bases have faced growing risks, including cyberattacks, espionage attempts, and sabotage.
In one incident, several unidentified drones were observed flying over the Manching airbase near Ingolstadt, Bavaria, earlier this year. Last year, a breach was discovered in the perimeter fence of the Cologne-Wahn airbase waterworks, accompanied by unusual water readings.
Additionally, the parliament revised rules regarding employment of former military members. Previously, ex-personnel required approval to work for foreign entities within ten years of leaving the armed forces. This restriction has now been removed, following reports that former Luftwaffe pilots provided training to Chinese pilots.
