Authorities have issued flood warnings in several areas of East Yorkshire after firefighters worked to pump water away from residential properties. The Environment Agency (EA) has indicated that additional flooding could occur along the Holderness Drain in Leven, as well as at Wawne Common and Woody Carr.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service deployed pumps on Sunday evening in the Orchard Grove area of Leven, and in Atwick and Aldbrough near Hornsea. The EA reported that a problem at the Holderness Drain pumping station was resolved on Sunday.
By 9 a.m. on Monday, two fire engines were actively reducing flood levels in Leven, making what the service described as "good progress."
Ann Woodward, clerk at Leven Parish Council, described the dykes as being "full to the top," causing water to overflow into surrounding fields. Some local residents noted difficulties getting children to school due to a lack of suitable footwear, and many had relocated their vehicles to higher ground on the street.
Tankers were brought in to assist in reducing flooding in Leven.
With further rain expected throughout the day, the River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill may also experience flooding. The EA issues flood warnings when flooding is likely in a specific location.
Several flood alerts, indicating possible flooding, are currently active. These include areas around Setting Dyke in Hull, the Burstwick and Keyingham drains, and the Lower River Derwent.
An EA spokesperson said: "Heavy rain on Monday may lead to flooding in parts of Yorkshire. Over the weekend, our teams have cleared debris from watercourses and prepared flood defences to help protect local communities. We advise residents not to drive through floodwater, as even 30cm (1ft) of flowing water can float a vehicle."
