Officials confirmed that a notification about a strong earthquake in western Nevada, sent on Thursday, December 4, was issued in error. The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a 5.9 magnitude quake near Dayton before removing the event from its official map. Despite the quick correction, the alert reached users as far away as San Francisco.
Lyon County, where the reported epicenter was located, later verified through its social media channels that the alert had been sent mistakenly. The county stated that there is no current threat to residents and urged the public to avoid calling emergency services regarding the incident.
Local authorities noted they are waiting for updated guidance and will release further details once confirmed. The U.S. Geological Survey has not yet issued a formal response or clarification.
