ESPN's 'College GameDay' Contemplates Unusual Week 15 Choice

This Saturday, ESPN's College GameDay will broadcast from Atlanta to cover the highly anticipated SEC Championship clash. The matchup features No. 9 Alabama (10-2) facing No. 3 Georgia (11-1), with major stakes for both teams. A victory for Alabama would secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, while Georgia is aiming for a first-round bye.

Given ESPN's exclusive rights to SEC games, it is expected that College GameDay would highlight this showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, another key conference championship occurs the same day, which some argued deserved attention from Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee, Nick Saban, and the rest of the team.

Saturday night will see No. 2 Indiana face No. 1 Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium, with coverage by Big Noon Kickoff. During a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee revealed that ESPN briefly considered sending College GameDay to Indianapolis for the one-versus-two matchup.

"There was a chance actually, there probably was never a chance that College GameDay would be in Indianapolis for one versus two but I do know at least it was thought about and talked about amongst people that I was in a conversation with," McAfee said. "It doesnt end up happening because I think we all expected to be heading down to Atlanta. Once again, its really cool down there being part of the SEC Championship, being at the convention center, Alabama and Georgia, obviously two titans of college ball, taking each other on."

ESPN has a specific process for choosing College GameDay locations. Earlier this season, some viewers criticized the network for covering the Florida-Miami game. To clarify, Rece Davis explained that the selection goes beyond team rankings and focuses on the most compelling storylines each week.

"We want to find the best storyline of the week. Now, a lot of times, people look at that and say that always has to be the game between two teams that have the highest ranking, if you have a ranked versus ranked game," Davis said. "But, its a little bit more than that. You can look for storylines, whats compelling."

While the Alabama-Georgia matchup provides a strong narrative, ESPNs media rights agreements likely played a significant role in choosing Atlanta as the broadcast site.
