Magic Johnson's Response to the Heartbreaking News of Former Lakers Teammate's Passing

Basketball fans are mourning the loss of Elden Campbell, a 15-year NBA veteran who has passed away at the age of 57. Campbell, known for his time with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Pistons, captured an NBA championship with the Pistons in 2004.

Magic Johnson, who shared the court with Campbell during the early 1990s, described the news as devastating. He praised Campbells talent and character, noting his impressive athleticism and gentle nature.

Drafted by the Lakers from Clemson in 1990, Campbell played eight-and-a-half seasons with the team before moving to Detroit, where he contributed to the Pistons title win over his former team. Standing 6-foot-11, Campbell averaged 10.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, earning recognition for both his performance and his easygoing personality.

Johnson shared his thoughts on social media: I just received devastating news that my former Lakers teammate and friend Elden Campbell has passed away. He was such a gentle soul. As a basketball player, he was extremely athletic. I loved throwing lobs to Elden because he could jump out of the gym and had so much talent! Cookie and I are praying for his family and Lakers Nation as they mourn during this difficult time. Rest in peace Big E!

Although Johnson and Campbell only played together during the 1990-91 season, their bond remained meaningful. Johnson stepped away from the team for several years following his HIV diagnosis and returned briefly for the 1995-96 season.

Former Lakers star and coach Byron Scott also reflected on Campbells passing, recalling his calm and composed nature. I just remember his demeanor. Thats why we nicknamed him Easy E, Scott said. He was just so cool, nothing ever rushed him. He was going to take his time. He was just easy. He was such a good dude. I loved Easy, man.
