Chi Ossé withdraws from challenging Jeffries following opposition from Mamdani

New York City Council member Chi Oss has decided not to pursue a primary challenge against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) after receiving public opposition from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Considering a potential run was an important step, Oss stated. However, I will not proceed without the support of DSA, and therefore this exploration has concluded.

Oss had officially filed to run for Congress in mid-November, seeking endorsement from the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the group that played a major role in Mamdanis highly praised mayoral campaign.

Mamdani, opposing the challenge, addressed a DSA forum to discourage the endorsement, noting that such a primary could hinder the implementation of his administrations key policy goals. Now is not the time for this kind of primary, he said in an interview with PIX11 News shortly after Oss submitted his paperwork. He emphasized that the focus should remain on advancing the citys affordability initiatives.

Mamdanis campaign emphasized affordability, with major proposals including free public transportation and universal child care for city residents.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) also indicated she would not back Osss congressional bid, echoing Mamdanis concerns that challenging the House Democratic leader at this time would be unwise.

Following Osss withdrawal, the New York City DSA chapter confirmed it had voted against endorsing his campaign.

Despite Oss ending his run, Mamdanis unexpected mayoral victory has motivated other progressive and socialist candidates to explore congressional campaigns.
