Chi Oss, a New York City councilmember who had planned to challenge House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, announced on Friday that he is ending his campaign for the congressional seat. Oss, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), stated that he will not pursue the run without the organizations endorsement, which was considered crucial for gaining support from progressive voters.
Considering this campaign was important, Oss said. However, I cannot move forward without the DSAs backing, so the process of exploration has ended.
The decision halts Osss effort shortly after he submitted paperwork to run for Brooklyns 8th District. The DSA had recently opted not to endorse him, though Oss initially indicated he would continue his campaign despite the setback, posting on X, IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
Support from local political figures also proved limited. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani opposed endorsing Oss and had reportedly advised him against running, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated she would not back his primary challenge. Osss campaign was framed as an attempt to bring renewed energy to opposition against former President Donald Trump.
Jeffries, who has held the House seat for multiple terms, has rarely faced serious Democratic opposition. He most recently secured reelection with 75 percent of the vote. With Oss stepping aside, Jeffries is positioned for an easy path to retain his leadership in the district.
