Billie Lourd, known for her roles in popular TV shows and films, became part of a club she never wished to join after losing her mother, Carrie Fisher, shortly after Christmas in 2016. Since then, the 33-year-old actress has channeled her sorrow into purpose, openly sharing her journey through loss and the emotions that come with it.
One of the most meaningful things I do is talk about grief, Billie explained. People often dont discuss it enough. Before experiencing it myself, I didnt have many references for dealing with such loss. Being honest about it feels crucial because its so complex.
Billie reflected on what would have been Carries 69th birthday, admitting the jealousy she feels when meeting people older than her mother. She acknowledged that anyone who has lost a loved one too soon might understand her sentiment, a feeling echoed by countless supporters in her social media comments.
While some may find Billies candidness intense, she emphasizes that grief involves a spectrum of emotions. Some days Im angry, some days Im sad, some days its light and joyful, like moments in the Redwoods, she shared. The Redwoods reference her recent collaboration with Columbia Sportswear for a Star Wars-inspired collection, which allowed Billie to recreate moments reminiscent of her mothers role as Princess Leia, with her own children by her side.
Including her children in these experiences helps Billie maintain a tangible connection to Carrie. Living in the Beverly Hills estate combining her mothers and grandmother Debbie Reynolds homes allows her children to experience their grandmothers presence through the house, the backyard, and cherished family traditions.
Billie also honors her mother through smaller, intimate rituals, like sharing Carries favorite foods and visiting her gravesite with her children. I bring a Coke and sit there, talking about her with my kids, Billie explained. These moments provide her a way to keep Carries memory alive and share stories about her with family and friends.
Publicly sharing her grief has become a meaningful practice. I start writing before the anniversary, and each year it changes, she said. Reading thousands of comments from people who relate is comfortingit reminds me Im not alone.
The Star Wars community also plays a role in this connection. Billie appreciates that fans continue to honor Carries legacy, noting, My mom infused her real self into Leia. Knowing Leia means knowing Carrie, and that is truly special.
Through these reflections and rituals, Billie Lourd continues to navigate her grief while celebrating the life and legacy of her mother, finding comfort in family, fans, and the memories they share.
