Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and his wife, entrepreneur and author Ayesha Curry, are celebrating more than just basketball achievements this week. Their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation has completed its final schoolyard renovation of the year at Emerson Elementary School in Oakland, California.
The foundation shared images on Instagram showing the transformed schoolyard. Our last schoolyard project of the year is finished. Emerson Elementary now features vibrant, student-designed outdoor spaces for both play and learning. With this project, weve positively impacted 24 Oakland schools, the post stated.
Despite rainy conditions during the project week, volunteers brought the plans to life. The upgraded schoolyard now includes two new play structures, refurbished sports courts, a soccer field with new goals, nature and garden areas, colorful murals, and a Little Town Library. According to the foundation, these improvements aim to bring more joy to every student at Emerson.
Transforming Oakland Schools
Founded in 2019 by Steph and Ayesha Curry, Eat. Learn. Play. has contributed over $90 million to Oakland schools through its Whole Child, Whole School strategy, which focuses on enhancing student well-being and learning environments. The foundation has provided 25 million meals to local children and families, renovated 20 schoolyards and six gymnasiums, redesigned 14 cafeterias, and modernized three libraries.
Beyond physical renovations, the Currys are addressing the literacy gap by committing to offer one-on-one tutoring to 10,000 Oakland students over the next five years. Ayesha Curry recently told TIME Magazine, With just a little bit of one-on-one tutoring, kids make incredible progress. They gain confidence that impacts every subject in school. Its truly transformative.
Deep Ties to Oakland
The Currys connection to Oakland remains strong even after the Warriors moved their home arena to San Francisco in 2019. Their foundations latest project at Emerson Elementary concludes a year marked by tangible achievements: 24 schoolyards redesigned to provide children with safe, engaging spaces for learning and play. The Currys continue to demonstrate that their influence extends well beyond the basketball court.
