During Germany's first state visit to the U.K. in 27 years, Catherine, Princess of Wales, made a striking appearance wearing the Oriental Circlet Tiara for the first time. This historic piece, originally presented by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria in 1853, has remained a treasured part of the royal collection for over 170 years.
The tiara is adorned with Burmese rubies and an impressive 2,600 diamonds, making it the most elaborate tiara ever worn by Kate Middleton. Before her, it had been worn by only four royals, including Queen Elizabeth II, who wore it once during a 2005 state banquet in Malta.
Historical Origins and Design Evolution
The Oriental Circlet Tiara was inspired by motifs Prince Albert admired at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He commissioned the crown jeweler Garrard to craft the piece, originally featuring diamonds and opals, completed in 1853 alongside a matching necklace, brooch, and earrings.
The tiara underwent several redesigns over the years. Following a 1857 lawsuit over family jewels, many original stones were removed and sent to Germany. Later, Queen Alexandra replaced the opals with Burmese rubies, though she and Queen Mary never wore it. The tiara became a favorite of the Queen Mother, who frequently wore it throughout her reign.
Royal Legacy and Modern Debut
After the Queen Mothers passing in 2002, Queen Elizabeth II inherited the tiara and wore it only once. Its estimated value is around $8 million, though its historical significance makes it practically priceless. Kate Middletons choice to wear the tiara during the German state visit also honored the royal family's German heritage, as Prince Alberts family originated from Germany.
Aside from the Oriental Circlet, Kate has worn only four other tiaras: the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Queen Mary Lovers Knot Tiara, the Lotus Flower Tiara, and the Cartier Halo Tiara, the latter of which she donned on her wedding day in 2011.
On December 3, 2025, the 172-year-old Oriental Circlet Tiara captivated onlookers, cementing its place as both the largest and most dazzling of the Princess of Wales collection.
