Giannis Antetokounmpo trade destinations: OKC has a chance, but teaming up with Wemby could be a good fit as well

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are currently in conversations regarding what lies ahead for both sides. The teams disappointing 913 record shows little indication that they are realistic championship contenders, which reflects several seasons of roster decisions that have failed to significantly strengthen the lineup.

Antetokounmpo, who will turn 31 in three days, continues to perform at an elite level. He is averaging 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 63.9 percent from the field. With production like that, it is inevitable that numerous teams will express interest in trading for the former Finals MVP.

While Milwaukee could choose to move him before the February 5 trade deadline, waiting until the offseason would provide more flexibility. At that point, teams could construct more complex deals involving several players to match his contract value more efficiently.

New York Knicks

Antetokounmpo has reportedly shown interest in playing for the New York Knicks, one of the leagues most prominent franchises. Any realistic trade would likely begin with Karl-Anthony Towns contract, which is the closest financial match to Giannis current deal. Towns is earning $53.1 million this season, roughly one million less than Antetokounmpo, meaning the Knicks would need to include additional salaries to complete a legal trade since they are already above the first apron.

From a value standpoint, New York would face a difficult challenge. The team lacks a large collection of draft picks and does not have many young prospects to offer. Most of their core players are in their prime years, which does not align with the type of full rebuild the Bucks would likely begin if they moved their franchise star. Still, if Antetokounmpo made it clear that New York is his preferred destination, the idea cannot be dismissed entirely.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Oklahoma City presents a very different scenario. Since they are currently below the first apron, the Thunder are allowed to absorb more salary in a trade than they send out. This makes the financial structure of a potential deal much simpler than it would be for many other teams.

In addition, the Thunder own a significant number of valuable draft picks, including a highly attractive selection originally belonging to the Los Angeles Clippers. A trade could be built around the contract of Isaiah Hartenstein, who is earning $28.5 million, along with draft compensation and other assets.

Even though Oklahoma City is already performing at a championship level and dominating the regular season, a player of Antetokounmpos caliber is impossible to ignore. Team executives would be obligated to thoroughly explore the idea, as their roster will soon become far more expensive. This situation may represent their best and possibly only realistic opportunity to acquire him.

San Antonio Spurs

Among all potential destinations, San Antonio stands out as one of the most logical and attractive options. The Spurs have the ability to match salaries, potentially using the contract of DeAaron Fox as the centerpiece of a deal. On top of that, they possess a deep collection of future draft picks and talented young players to build a strong package for Milwaukee.

San Antonio can also include expiring contracts such as Harrison Barnes and Kelly Olynyk. This would help the Bucks reduce future salary commitments and provide them with additional financial flexibility in the following summer. If Milwaukee chooses a complete rebuild, the deal could even expand into a three-team trade, allowing the Bucks to flip those expiring contracts for more long-term assets and draft capital.

The Spurs can offer a rare combination of immediate value, long-term upside, and financial relief all while giving Antetokounmpo a chance to compete for another championship alongside generational talent Victor Wembanyama. That pairing alone makes San Antonio particularly appealing.

Houston Rockets

Houston also deserves consideration due to its impressive stockpile of picks and young talent. However, aligning the salaries for a trade would be more difficult, especially before the deadline. One of their most valuable tradable contracts is that of Fred VanVleet, but it will not be available as a long-term asset during the offseason, limiting Houstons flexibility in a future deal.

Final Thoughts

No matter where Antetokounmpo might end up, acquiring a player of his stature will require a massive trade package. Given his impact on both ends of the floor and his proven championship pedigree, such a price would be more than justified.
