German president draws parallels between UK relations after Brexit and Oasis

Germany's President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, compared the evolving relationship between Germany and the UK after Brexit to the long-awaited reunion of the famously quarrelsome Oasis brothers. Speaking to Parliament, Steinmeier acknowledged that the UK's departure from the EU had brought disappointment and uncertainty, but emphasized that both nations were committed to moving forward.

"Don't Look Back in Anger, as Oasis famously sang," Steinmeier noted during his second day in the UK Parliament.

During his state visit, Steinmeier plans to meet German footballers active in the Premier League and tour the V&A Museum's David Bowie Centre, highlighting the artists strong connection to Berlin. His visit marks the first by a German president in 27 years, beginning with a ceremonial reception by King Charles and Queen Camilla and a lavish banquet at Windsor Castle.

In Parliaments Royal Gallery, he underscored the gradual strengthening of German-British relations since Brexit. "It is typically British to stay calm and move forward pragmatically," Steinmeier said, encouraging a forward-looking approach.

He returned to the Oasis analogy, highlighting the band's reunion after 16 years of disputes between Liam and Noel Gallagher. "Our relations may have evolved, but our bond remains," he stated. "Let us focus on the future together."

Earlier, Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender visited Windsor Castle, saw Queen Victorias winter sleigh, attended a charity reception, explored Westminster Abbey, and laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, honoring those who died in World War One without known graves.

The final day of his visit will include a trip to the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, destroyed in World War Two, symbolizing reconciliation. Steinmeier is also set to receive an honorary degree from Oxford University and learn about medical research during his stay.
