Dean Butler from "Little House on the Prairie" Applauds Melissa Gilbert as an 'Exceptional Child Actress': 'She's Got It All' (Exclusive)

Dean Butler fondly recalls his experiences alongside Melissa Gilbert on the beloved series Little House on the Prairie. The 69-year-old actor, who joined the show in 1979, shared his admiration for Gilberts remarkable talent and authenticity during his time on the series.

America adored Laura Melissa Gilbert for her spirited, honest, and vibrant presence, Butler said. Audiences connected with her characters innocence and charm in such a natural way.

Butler became part of the cast in season six as Almanzo Wilder, who eventually became Laura Ingalls husband. His character, often affectionately called "Manly" by Laura, drew attention from other young women in the fictional town of Walnut Grove.

During fan events, Butler often hears the question, Wheres Laura? and he enjoys responding with lighthearted quips. Reflecting on working with Gilbert and series creator Michael Landon, he emphasizes their central role in the shows enduring appeal. Laura and Pas relationship is the heart of Little House, he explained. Melissa brought such raw emotion and authenticity at a young age she was an extraordinary child actress.

Cast at just nine years old, Gilbert starred on the series for a decade and earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Laura Ingalls. Butler praises her as a performer, noting her emotional depth, distinctive appearance, and natural magnetism. She was the complete package genuinely captivating and impossible not to love, he said.

Butler cherished being part of Lauras growth, observing how her character evolved from childhood to adolescence, while maintaining her bond with Pa. It was special to witness and participate in that journey, he said.

Looking back at the 50th anniversary of the show in April 2024, Butler recalled the age difference between him and Gilbert when their characters first met. He was 23, while Gilbert was only 15. The storyline later included their characters first on-screen kiss. Butler noted Gilberts natural ability to handle mature scenes despite her limited life experience.

Gilbert has since reflected on that time, expressing discomfort at being asked to portray romantic scenes with an older co-star as a teenager, and acknowledged the support she received on set to ensure her safety.

Butler has been reconnecting with fans and fellow cast members for the new documentary Little House Homecoming. The film features cast members Karen Grassle, Alison Arngrim, Charlotte Stewart, and Wendi Lou Lee as they revisit the locations that inspired the original books. The documentary explores Laura Ingalls Wilders legacy and highlights her impact on the Little House community.

All nine seasons of Little House on the Prairie are available for streaming on Prime Video and Peacock.
