The Writers Guild of America West and the Writers Guild of America East have publicly opposed Netflixs proposed $82.7 billion purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, urging authorities to prevent the deal from moving forward.
In a joint statement, the guilds emphasized that allowing the largest streaming platform to absorb one of its main competitors is exactly the kind of scenario antitrust laws are meant to stop.
The statement warned that the merger could lead to significant negative consequences for the entertainment industry, including job losses, reduced wages, poorer working conditions, higher consumer costs, and a decline in both the quantity and variety of content available to audiences.
The guilds also highlighted broader concerns about industry consolidation, noting that a small number of dominant companies already control what viewers can access on television, streaming services, and in cinemas. This merger would worsen that imbalance.
