"Do you know who truly has the biggest heart? People who feed wildlife. But please, stop doing it!" urged wildlife specialist John Griff, widely known as Griff (@griffwild), in a widely shared TikTok video where he explains why feeding wild animals is harmful.
Griff has spent years as a conservationist with California State Parks and hosts the Animal Planet show Wild Jobs. In his video, he emphasizes that offering food to wild animals causes them to lose their natural fear of humans. "When wild animals become comfortable around people, the outcomes are rarely positive," he warns.
Providing food to animals such as raccoons or coyotes can also cause their populations to increase unnaturally. If the feeder moves away, animals may face sudden starvation. Additionally, neighbors may respond to these animals by leaving out toxic substances, which can poison wildlife. Even indirect consumption, when one animal eats another that has ingested poison, can be deadly.
Instead of feeding animals, Griff recommends planting native species. These plants supply natural food and shelter while supporting pollinators critical to food production. He suggests using the National Wildlife Federations Native Plants Finder website, which provides a list of native plants based on your zip code.
Native plants also offer advantages for homeowners. They require less water, fewer fertilizers, minimal pest control, and reduce mowing needs. Even small spaces, like balconies, can host a few native plants to benefit local wildlife.
Griffs TikTok has gained almost 50,000 likes. Viewers praised his clear and respectful approach, with comments like "Preach!" and "Thank you for educating people!" Some asked about feeding birds, particularly crows. Griff clarified that most bird feeding is acceptable and suggested consulting allaboutbirds.org for guidance.
